Money Saving Tips

Times have changed and so have Insurance Companies terms and conditions. When you take out insurance you agree by paying a premium to comply to those terms and conditions. One of these conditions is that your doors and accessible windows security level must be to the particular standard for that company.

Insurance Companies.

Every insurance company will state which type of lock is required on different types of door. In addition they also require that the locks are correctly fitted to the door, usually by a locksmith, a badly fitted lock is deemed to be not up to standard, so cutting corners to save money can be very costly. You have invested a small fortune in your property and possessions, a few pounds spent on locks is a wise move and will give you peace of mind.

Failure to comply with your insurance companies terms and conditions could mean that you not only risk losing your property but may mean that you receive no financial compensation.

The Importance of remembering a key.

When you move into a property how sure are you that you are holding all the existing keys to all of your doors?
If you unknowingly allow access to your home by key and your possessions are removed there would be no evidence of forced entry and you could have a very difficult time proving that your claim for theft is valid! You could be in the position of losing treasured possessions, unable to claim for them and having to cover the cost of having new locks fitted as well. For most people it is a one off exercise best done at or shortly after moving in. Some insurance companies now request that locks are changed, Don't take the chance that someone unknown to you has a spare key!

Updating and Upgrading your locks.

If you update or upgrade your locks by a locksmith, use one that can cut any extra keys you need whilst on site. It is probably about the same price as you would pay elsewhere and because he will check them as part of the service you will not have the cost or hassle of several trips into town because the copy you had made did not fit properly.
Always check keys for smooth operation, with the door in the open position as it is easier to rectify problems if they occur whilst in the process of checking that the key works easily.

UPVC Door Systems.

UPVC door systems are more prone to going wrong than locks in wooden doors and the problems are best worked on from inside the property. This means that if the fault occurred when you locked the door then you are locked out!

Picture the scene, it is a Saturday night you just have to pop in home get changed and go out on the town, because it is wintertime it just happens to be dark, cold and raining cats and dogs. Ask yourself how easy, how quick and how much is it going to cost to find a locksmith who is able and willing to sort your problem? Not only that but it is likely to upset your whole evenings plans as well!

Most houses that have UPVC doors have two doors. How much easier it would have have been if you had taken the key to the other door as well. You still need a locksmith but I would sooner come the next day and charge you less and the problem does not wreck your day. Take that spare key with you!

Final Tips.

Anyone can accidentally lock their car keys in the vehicle, but to only have one key is tempting providence. Lose or damage that key and all you then have is an expensive metal box Obtaining a spare key is usually far cheaper when you have a key than when you have no key at all and a lot less frustrating than being without your wheels for up to a week as well as having to pay a lot more than the cost of a spare key. If the car is away from home, possibly in a car park you may be fined for over parking and have to pay to get it towed home as well. Invest in a spare key!
